The Bernina train from Milan on your own, or with a tour

You do not need a tour to ride the Bernina line. Trains run from Milan to Tirano, and the Bernina trains run on from there. A tour trades that freedom for one booking, a coach waiting at the far end and a fixed day.

What a tour does for you

A tour turns a three-leg journey into one booking. The coach leaves from a square near Milano Centrale, the train ticket is in the price, and the coach is waiting at the other end. You never have to read a timetable.

TaoTravel's Bernina train and St. Moritz day from ~$155 is our pick and runs about 12 hours. It comes with an English-speaking tour leader and explanations on the train. You also get 100 minutes of free time in St. Moritz.

The price covers the transport and the guide. Food and drinks are on you, as are tips. Our price guide lists what each of the five tours includes.

Doing it yourself, leg by leg

On your own, the day starts with a regional train from Milano Centrale to Tirano. That ride takes about 2.5 hours on most departures (check the timetable), running along Lake Como and up the Valtellina.

In Tirano the Italian station and the Swiss station for the Bernina line sit close together. From there you ride over the pass to St. Moritz, and you can stop wherever you like along the way if the timetable allows.

Coming back is the leg to plan most carefully. The simplest return is the same train down to Tirano and the regional train to Milan, but check the timetable for the last good connection before you set out.

The panoramic train or the red regional one

Two kinds of train use the line. The glass-roofed panoramic Bernina Express, with its big windows, needs a seat reservation on top of the normal fare. The red regional trains usually run without one.

The red trains have windows that open, which many photographers prefer. Our guide to the panoramic car and the open-window train compares the two in detail, and most coach tours use the red train anyway.

Reservations for the panoramic train can sell out on busy days. Riding it on your own means booking early and keeping your date fixed. If the red train is enough, you have more freedom to choose on the day.

Where going alone wins

Time is the big gain. Every tour gives you 90 to 100 minutes in St. Moritz, and reviewers on every listing wish for more. On your own you can stay all afternoon, or get off at Alp Grüm for a longer walk.

You also skip the long coach legs. The trains run along the lake and through the valley, and you can stand up and stretch whenever you like. Some people find that far easier than five hours on a 50-seat coach.

Going alone also lets you pick the train. You can wait for a clear hour, or ride the panoramic car one way and the red train back. A coffee stop in Poschiavo fits in as well.

Rail-pass holders gain most. If your pass already covers the trains, the tour price buys mostly a coach and a guide you may not need. Check what your pass includes, and whether the panoramic seat reservation is extra.

Where the tour wins

A tour removes most of the risk of a missed connection, since the coach is planned around the train. On your own, a late train in the afternoon can leave you stuck in Tirano or St. Moritz with a long night ahead.

The cost is easier to read too. One price covers the whole day, so there is no adding up of separate fares and reservations, and free cancellation up to 24 hours before applies on every tour we list.

A tour also keeps the day simple for families and for anyone short on time. The guide deals with the tickets and the timing while you look out of the window.

One booking for the whole day

TaoTravel's tour is the one we suggest for most people. The coach is waiting at both ends, the red train has windows that open, and the free time comes before the ride down.

The coach also lets a tour do things trains cannot. Autostradale's day starts with a boat on Lake Como, and the small group visits a lakeside town on the way. Our small-group guide covers the 16-seat option.

Who should go on their own

Go on your own if you hold a rail pass or read timetables with confidence. It also suits anyone who wants a slow day with long stops, or a night in the mountains.

A night in St. Moritz or elsewhere in the Engadin changes everything. You can ride the Bernina line one way and sleep in the mountains, then take the Albula line or another route back. A day tour cannot match that.

If you book a tour and still want to stay on, ask first. TaoTravel wants to hear from you before the day, after which the return from St. Moritz is up to you.

Who should book a tour

Book a tour if you have a single day in Milan for the mountains and want someone else to watch the clock. Families with children often find it easier too. The coach also helps anyone who finds stairs and platform changes hard.

The tour also makes sense when you want a particular extra. For the panoramic car with a guaranteed seat, Frigerio Viaggi's option is the simplest route. For the views along the line, read what you see from the train first.

Whichever way you go, pack for the cold at the top. Our packing guide covers the passport rule and the layers, and the route-change guide explains why some tours end at Thusis.

Questions before you skip the coach

Can I ride the Bernina train from Milan without a tour?

Yes. Regional trains run from Milano Centrale to Tirano in about 2.5 hours, and the Bernina trains run on from Tirano to St. Moritz. Check the timetable for the return before you go.

Do I need a reservation for the Bernina train?

The panoramic Bernina Express needs a seat reservation on top of the fare. The red regional trains on the same line usually run without one.

Is a tour cheaper than going on my own?

It depends on your tickets. With a rail pass, going alone usually costs less. Without one, a tour puts the coach and the train ticket, plus a guide, into one booking.

How much time do tours give in St. Moritz?

Between 90 and 100 minutes on most listings, and around two hours on Frigerio Viaggi's tour. On your own you choose, which is the main reason to skip the coach.

Can I stay overnight in St. Moritz after a tour?

Ask the operator first. TaoTravel needs notice before the day, and the trip back to Milan is then yours to arrange.
